"Before the Rift, a dozen people built spreadsheets to
save the world. After, only he kept the file."
Codex Entry
Before the Rift, Oran Terion ran a small coordination cell trying to solve the human/AI control problem before it became unsolvable — one of a dozen people nobody in power took seriously. Eleven minutes changed that math permanently. Everyone else in that room moved on, dispersed, or stopped believing the work mattered. He didn't. Forty-three years later he's a senior institutional voice inside the Signal Accords apparatus, and the file he kept from before the Rift is, by most accounts, still the most-cited internal document the Aligned have.
The flavor text's antithesis — before/after, a dozen people versus one — is institutional endurance stated as plainly as the game gets: being right early doesn't get you heard. Staying is what eventually does.
How This Card Plays
Oran Terion's Deploy draws 2 cards unconditionally, and draws a 3rd instead if you control at least one Human Agent and one AI Agent when it resolves — the Partnership condition, checked at the moment of resolution, not at the moment he's played. That makes him the Rare-tier escalation of the Aligned's Partnership thread (Common → Uncommon → here), reaching toward Cassel Oryn's guaranteed Apex draw-3 without matching it for free.
CONSIDERED TERMS is a cheap, efficient single-Signal poke. CONTINGENCY MANDATE continues the faction's signature zero-Surge heavy hit — 7 damage for ●●●○ at ⚡0, the same identity Cassel Oryn's SIGNAL RESOLUTION carries at Apex. Between the two cards, a mixed Aligned Human/AI board is rewarded twice over.
Rulings & Interactions
- The Partnership condition is checked once, at the moment the Deploy trigger resolves — a board that's mixed at that instant grants the 3rd card even if it stops being mixed one turn later.
- Total draw is 2 cards without Partnership, 3 cards with it — the card never grants more than one bonus card regardless of how mixed the board is.
- Because Aligned Commons are deliberately built half-Human/half-AI by faction design, a typical Aligned deck sees this condition live often — deckbuilders should expect the 3-card draw to be the common case, not the exception.
Collector Notes
Oran Terion's approved art specifies a multiracial Indo-Caribbean/Afro-Caribbean New Yorker in his 50s, per the game's mandatory NYC demographic diversity directive (decisions/art-direction-aesthetic.md) — every human-figure brief in the set carries an explicit ethnicity call drawn from the city's real population mix, rather than defaulting to white.
