Kael Vorten has been cutting Signal conduit since the second year After the Rift. He was an engineer before that — one of the people who helped build the network he now spends every operation trying to sever. The rank-and-file don't ask what he built before; the ones who've been in the cells long enough already know, and it's part of why they follow him instead of someone with cleaner hands.
He doesn't wear a sigil. None of the Resisters do — affiliation stays off the body, on principle and for operational security both. What marks him instead is the economy of motion of someone who has made this exact cut thousands of times and stopped finding any part of it satisfying a long time ago.
The flavor text's third beat — "he'd run out of names for what he was cutting" — is the whole card. Vorten started this as a fight against a specific kind of intelligence. Forty-three years of increasingly precise severance work later, the line between disciplined tactics and the cold, unfeeling logic he set out to destroy has gotten hard for even him to locate.
How This Card Plays
Kael Vorten's Deploy hits every AI Agent in play — both sides — the instant he lands. Run him in a clean mono-Human Resister shell and it's a free sweep. Run him in a mixed-designation build with your own AI Agents on the board, and he burns your own side too — that's the faction's mandated weakness, printed directly onto its own leader.
FOUNDATION STRIKE is a straightforward ●● attack, but at ⚡3 it's the highest-Surge Move 1 on any Apex Agent in the set — using it even once contributes more to the Singularity Clock than almost anything else you can do. SIGNAL SEVERANCE is the payoff for reaching ●●●●: it deals 8 damage, strips every attached Signal from the target, and sends it to the Void regardless of remaining Resilience — a full, unconditional removal that bypasses the normal damage-vs-Resilience math entirely. The cost is real: accumulating four Raw Signal on one Agent takes patience, and racing to kill Vorten before he gets there is the correct read against him.
Rulings & Interactions
- The Deploy trigger fires on entry. It fires again if he later leaves the Grid (Withdraw) and is redeployed.
- SIGNAL SEVERANCE resolves damage, then Signal removal, then Void routing, then Surge, in that order — the target's remaining Resilience is irrelevant once Void routing happens.
- The Strong-vs-Collective +3 matchup bonus applies before Void routing but doesn't change how Signal Severance's unconditional send-to-Void works — it was already unconditional.
